The Oath

By  |

We had a lot of fun growing up, but there was one thing my mom never had a sense of humor about.

My baby dolls.

Every time a new doll was brought into the house, I was required to take an oath. I would stand in front of my mom with my right hand raised, and repeat after her – word for word.

I promise to love (insert doll’s name) with all of my heart. I will never lay her face down – she will always be able to breathe. I will brush her hair and keep it tidy. I will include her in my activities and make sure the other dolls are nice to her. I will always dress her appropriately for the weather, and I will wipe her clean whenever she gets dirty.

So it was no surprise that my mom sent me this email last week in honor of the Cincinnati Reds Opening Day.

Hey Anna!
Just wanted you to know that the girls are all ready for Opening Day! One of them is a bigger Reds fan than the other – can you guess which one?

Love Mom

I looooove YOUR mom!!! Aren’t those Fisher-Price dolls? My daughter had several. She was – I’m sad to say – NOT a good doll-mommy. She cut all the hair off ‘Mandy’ to see if she’d cry. When she DIDN’T, my child decided she was a boy and renamed her Man. (???????) Whatever. ‘Jennifer’ fared a BIT better. She was tossed in the pool to see if she could swim her way out. Joby (apartment’s head yard/grounds guy) pulled her out before she ‘drowned’ and gave my daughter a lecture. He told her to be a better mama to her babies. Her response? “THAT’S what my Pia (Comanche for mommy) says. Don’t you people know these things are PLASTIC?” I should have made the kid take an oath. YOUR mom was BRILLIANT!

My daughter named her first really nice doll “Knee” — like the part of your leg.

That’s hysterical! Your mom is fantastic and so is that Cincinnati Reds doll outfit – it’s good to see you were raised properly 😉 GO, REDS!

I love that your mom kept the dolls! I was a doll lover and my mom was a doll collector. She SAID they were mine, but when I left home she sold every last one of them. I’m still traumatized. How could I ever think my first husband and father of my children was more important than my dolls???? sheesh. Well, live and learn!

LOL!!! My mother made me take a similar pledge for my American Girl Dolls. I wish I still knew where they were at.

I found you through WFMW, I’d love for you to link up on my blog.
