My Life

Letters, Letters and More Letters

By  |

In looking through old posts, I realized that I write a lot of letters. Whether I’m addressing my family or my womb or Oprah – a letter just seems to get the job done for me.

I learned this from my mother. Although she can lie through her teeth sometimes, she really taught me to stand up for what I believe in.

For example – when I was growing up, we went through a phase where we visited the Hot ‘n Now drive through at least once a day. And their speaker system was just terrible. We couldn’t hear them, they couldn’t hear us – and day after day – it became more and more frustrating.

So my mom did the only thing she could do. She wrote a letter to the management and highly encouraged them to get a new speaker system.

Since my mom was their most loyal customer at the time, her letter carried a lot of weight. And one day as we were going for our daily spin through the drive-through – they had a new speaker system!

When they saw my mom, all of the workers came to the drive-through window to clap and thank her for making their lives easier.

It was a proud moment.

While I’m not making any major changes in the world (like a new speaker at Hot ‘n Now) – I still like to write a good letter now and then.

Here are a few of my favorites.

I found your blog when you guest posted your sheet curtains at House of Hepworth. Thanks for your humor. Sometimes I read your blog during breakfast while my little one is eating (instead of naptime) and we both have a good laugh!

Oh my goodness…you crack me up! I LOVE your blog and the way you balance the joy and the difficulty of mothering while making me laugh the entire time.

I inherited the letter writing curse from my mom as well. She's constantly writing to someone and gets all giddy anytime her comments get published in the newspaper. lol

You have a GREAT blog! I write letters all the time…it's amazing the kind of things I've gotten for free because I commended or complained about something I experienced. I fully support writing letters 🙂

Hey, the squeaky wheel gets the grease! A few months ago I got a nearby office building to adjust its sprinklers so that they no longer spray mud across the sidewalk and aren't on when it's raining, simply by figuring out to whom to send an e-mail suggesting that some adjustments would save them money on water, potting soil, and sidewalk maintenance.

You might like this funny letter to Bigelow Tea that one of my friends wrote in college. The best thing about it is the extremely polite response from Ms. Bigelow herself.
